Program Comprises Eight Pillars

1. Coaching for Convergence Excellence and Grantsmanship

Junior Fellows participate in individualized and small-group coaching sessions focused on:

  • Scientific communication and scholarly writing, including abstracts, presentations,      scientific articles and grants
  • Experience design, including adapting to audience needs and motivations.
  • Building a professional convergent experience portfolio
  • Strategies for obtaining external funding, including grantsmanship, proposal development      and fellowship/scholarship applications

Each Junior Fellow develops an annual Professional Development Plan and completes at least one competitive funding application during their fellowship.


2. Innovation and Entrepreneurship Academy

Junior Fellows participate in a structured innovation curriculum introducing:

  • Design thinking
  • Human-centered innovation
  • Needs identification
  • Technology assessment
  • Intellectual property fundamentals
  • Regulatory science
  • Business model development
  • Venture creation and commercialization

Teams develop innovation concepts addressing real-world challenges in health, sustainability, or community resilience.


3. Distinguished Webinar Series

Monthly webinars expose Junior Fellows to internationally recognized leaders from academia, industry, government, healthcare, and entrepreneurship.

Topics include:

  • Convergent research
  • Artificial intelligence and digital health
  • Sustainability and climate resilience
  • Biomedical innovation
  • Leadership and ethics
  • Global health
  • Translational science and engineering
  • Emerging technologies

Each webinar includes an interactive discussion with invited speakers.


4. Career and Academic Counseling

Individual mentoring supports Junior Fellows in selecting graduate, professional, and entrepreneurial pathways aligned with their aspirations.

Guidance includes:

  • Graduate school preparation
  • MD, PhD, ScD, DVM, JD, MPH, and MBA pathways
  • Fellowship opportunities
  • International study and research experiences
  • Career planning and professional networking

Each Junior Fellow develops an academic development component of their Professional Development Plan.

Junior Fellows receive training in:

  • Executive presence
  • Strategic decision-making

Leadership exercises are reinforced through participation in collaborative experiences and community initiatives.


6. Community Impact and Service

Each Junior Fellow completes a community-engagement experience that applies scientific and technical knowledge to address a local challenge.

Experiences may involve:

  • STEM outreach
  • Public health education
  • Environmental stewardship
  • Workforce development
  • Health equity initiatives
  • Community technology deployment
  • Citizen science

The objective is to reinforce the principle that innovation achieves its highest value when it creates measurable societal benefit.


7. Global Engagement

Junior Fellows are encouraged to develop international perspectives through:

  • Virtual collaborations
  • International conferences
  • Global innovation challenges
  • Cross-cultural leadership experiences
  • Engagement with international scholars and institutions

Travel awards may be competitively awarded to support participation in international scientific meetings.


8. AIIMSEI Grand Challenge Framework

Each year Jr. Fellows participate in a capstone challenge, The Convergence Studio, in which interdisciplinary teams propose solutions to a major societal problem. Here the Framework is set and within The Convergence Studio the Grand Challenge is navigated.

Experiences are evaluated on:

  • Innovation
  • Technical rigor
  • Feasibility
  • Scalability
  • Sustainability
  • Societal impact

Teams receive seed funding, mentorship, and opportunities for further development.
