Pankaj Vadgama, MBBS, Ph.D.

  

Dr. Pankaj Vadgama is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Biochemistry at Queen Mary University of London. He graduated in Medicine and Chemistry at the University of Newcastle, UK and completed a PhD in biosensors as MRC Training Fellow. He was appointed Professor of Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Manchester and Consultant Chemical Pathologist, at Hope Hospital, Salford in 1988. He later became Head of the Department of Medicine University of Manchester (Salford), Research Dean at the Medical School and President of the Manchester Pathology Society. He moved to Queen Mary University of London as Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) in Biomedical Materials with an appointment as Clinical Consultant at Barts Health NHS Trust. His main research interest is electrochemical biosensors for continuous monitoring. Additional work has encompassed studies on spider silk as an implant material, microfluidics for membrane fabrication, recess electrodes for biocompatibility, bone adhesive polymers and nanosilver as a catheter antimicrobial. His spinout company has received NIHR funding for immunodiagnostics. He has over 250 publications and has edited two books. He has been on numerous grants panels and was a contributor to UK Research Council strategies on bio- and nanomaterials. He has served on the UK Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) panels on Biomaterials, Nanomaterials and Smart Materials. He was given the Foundation Award of the UK Association of Clinical Biochemistry and later made Honorary Member for lifetime achievement. He is currently on the UK British Standards Institute (BSI) committee on nanotechnology and UK representative for nanotechnology nomenclature at ISO. He is visiting pathologist at Blackheath hospital, London. He was previously Editor in Chief of Bioelectrochemistry and is currently Editor in Chief of the Journal of Functional Biomaterials.
